In these strange times, many of us have been spending more time in our homes, and our experiences are both personal and collective. As we slowly adapt to the pandemic, our homes have likely become a bigger part of our everyday lives, many of us working from home, taking up new skills, prioritising self-care or connecting more with those we care about. This workshop with embroidery specialist and The Fashion Lab founder Melanie Kyles will help document this time in history and our experience of time spent at home. This could take the form of written text or imagery, and you’ll be creatively encouraged and inspired to draw out and hand-embroider your own interpretation of how your life at home may be represented.
What you will learn:
How to draw out your design and apply to fabric (examples provided)
How to mount your fabric into your hoop
Learn a number of versatile stitches and how they can be used in your design
How to neatly finish off the back of your embroidery hoop
Suggested supplies:
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss
Embroidery hoop
Woven fabric (including a scrap piece to practice stitches)
Scissors
Pencil
Paper
Access to a web monitor/mic (mobile, tablet or laptops are all ideal) and decent internet connection
Once you have purchased your ticket, you will receive an email from SITC organisers with your Zoom meeting ID and password needed to attend the workshop. You will have the option to use video and audio to participate, which is encouraged but not essential…it’s great to see everyone’s faces and it can also help to make sure you’re on the right track when the development of your embroidery is visible!
